A managed alpine ski area above car-free Zermatt, linking Sunnegga–Rothorn, Gornergrat and the Schwarzsee–Matterhorn glacier sector.
109MAPS / UNDERSTAND THE AREA
Explore mapped pistes and lifts, compare the official plans and choose the right starting base. Check current opening separately.
Colours show the published skiing status or confirmed operating calendar, not whether every lift is running. Check the operator before travel.
Confirmed dates change colours automatically in the place’s local time. Tentative dates, conflicting reports and expired checks remain black.
Independent ODbL community geometry covers the reviewed Zermatt managed alpine network around Sunnegga–Rothorn, Gornergrat and Schwarzsee–Trockener Steg, with selected Zermatt-managed glacier lines. The shared glacier straddles the border; this is not a Cervinia or Valtournenche profile or an international itinerary. Italian approach/valley terrain, the international Glacier Ride II, technical goods lines, abandoned lifts, doubtful connectors and backcountry/freeride terrain are omitted. The Gornergrat railway and underground Sunnegga funicular are essential transport references but are omitted from this aerial-lift/downhill renderer. Community way segments are not an operator piste inventory; unverified local colours remain grey. Unconfirmed: the linked operator winter panorama has a 2025/26 destination path; its current printed edition and remote-preview basis have not been established, so no operator artwork is copied or embedded. The separate interactive page requires external-content consent. Geometry and archive photography do not establish current skiing, an open return or safe navigation.
HOW THE AREA CONNECTS
Access: Separate village funicular entrance; confirm the scheduled winter start and actual connections.
Ridge and lower-sector managed terrain; the essential underground funicular is not drawn as an aerial lift.
Access: A separate railway and condition-dependent ski connections; check the railway timetable and pass scope.
High alpine sector distinct from the Schwarzsee/glacier approach and from Italy.
Access: Use the dated Zermatt–Furi–Trockener Steg arrangement and each onward lift’s last journey.
Glacier and managed lower terrain; current open skiing and a complete valley return remain unconfirmed.
The pin is the community Matterhorn Express lower station. Through 13 November the winter timetable uses the Zermatt–Furi–Trockener Steg pendulum cable cars; Matterhorn Express via Schwarzsee is scheduled from 14 November. The railway and Sunnegga entrances are separate.
Sunnegga–Rothorn, Gornergrat and the Schwarzsee/glacier chain have different access and return paths. Gornergrat railway and the underground Sunnegga funicular are essential but omitted from this aerial-lift/downhill renderer. The shared glacier and an International ticket do not confirm an open border.
For 1–27 November the timetable gives last descent 15:45 from Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and 17:00 on Zermatt–Furi. Unconfirmed: the complete current return chain, substitute cable-car final boarding and usable cross-border last connection are not established. Confirm all onward steps with staff.
01 / FIELD OVERVIEW
Choose the correct village base, check the November cable-car substitution and plan each last descent. Swiss and Italian ticket scopes, disputed dates/prices, limited glacier skiing and the shared glacier remain distinct.

The Zermatt side of Matterhorn Ski Paradise combines Sunnegga–Rothorn, Gornergrat and Schwarzsee–Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. This guide covers that managed alpine ski and snowboard network. Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche remain separate Italian places even where an International ticket connects them. The operator advertises up to 200 km for the Zermatt pass and a further 160 km in Italy; the combined 360 km and 52-lift headline is not a Swiss-only inventory or today’s open offer.
The village, wooded lower approaches, high ridges and glacier have different access and weather exposure. The operator highlights Rothorn–Sunnegga pistes 11 and 7, Tufternkumme 15 and the Hirli area 52/54. These are planning references, not recommended open routes or a promise of suitability. Its dated early-season lift/piste display names Furggsattel, Gandegg, Testa Grigia, Plateau Rosa and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Check the exact signed local grade and current area before choosing terrain; no universal difficulty conversion is supplied.
The operator’s daytime report updated 3 November 2026 at 10:10 local time lists open glacier ski slopes, including Furggsattel, Gandegg, Plateau Rosa and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, with serving lifts open. Its headline reports 20 km of open slopes. This is limited managed glacier skiing, not confirmation that every sector or the village descent is open. The point-map observation expires after 22 hours and then returns to unknown without fresh evidence. Unconfirmed: the complete return to the village, final boarding during the cable-car substitution and a usable two-way cross-border return remain unestablished. The live border panel supplies one 14:50 value while leaving the other direction blank; agree every onward journey with staff.
Historical: genuine Trockener Steg station photograph taken 26 November 2019 by Salamanamanjaro, CC BY-SA 4.0. It shows the station and then-existing cableways; it does not establish present infrastructure, current snow, skiing or access.
The location pin marks the community-mapped Matterhorn Express lower station, separate from Zermatt railway station, the Gornergrat railway departure and the Sunnegga entrance. The operator’s October 2026 edition of the winter timetable says the Zermatt–Furi–Trockener Steg pendulum cable cars provide the approach from 28 September through 13 November; Matterhorn Express via Schwarzsee is scheduled from 14 November. Match your boarding station and any lesson meeting point to the actual arrangement rather than following a mapped gondola blindly.
For 1–27 November the timetable lists Zermatt–Furi 08:30–16:50 with last descent 17:00, and Trockener Steg–Matterhorn Glacier Paradise 09:00–15:30 with last descent 15:45. Furggsattel is listed 09:00–15:20 subject to snow/weather; Plateau Rosa ski lifts 09:20–15:00. The live display separately shows the current Furi–Trockener Steg cable car 08:40–16:20. These are individual transport windows, not the latest safe time to start a ski descent or a guarantee that each lift opens.
The timetable schedules the main Sunnegga–Rothorn/Gornergrat winter area from 28 November, with some individual lifts later or snow dependent. The Gornergrat railway has its own timetable; the underground Sunnegga funicular and that railway are not drawn as aerial lifts on our community map. Furi–Riffelberg, Gant and Findelbahn are sector-connection references whose actual operation must be checked. The International pass and a line on the shared glacier do not establish an open border.
Through 29 January the published last ascent from Zermatt for Cervinia is 14:50; it becomes 15:20 from 30 January. Glacier Ride II is scheduled closed for maintenance 7 January–26 February 2027. Sunnegga’s funicular is scheduled closed from 12 April 2027 for controls work. Unconfirmed: today’s complete return chain, final boarding during the November cable-car substitution and the usable cross-border last connection are not established. Ask staff before ascending or crossing and allow for each onward lift, download, walk and train.
Zermatt Tourism directs private motorists to Täsch; ordinary private cars, including electric cars, do not continue into Zermatt. It describes parking at Matterhorn Terminal and private providers, followed by the shuttle train or a licensed taxi. Its published shuttle reference is about 12 minutes with departures every 20 minutes. Check the railway’s actual dated journey and parking conditions rather than treating this general frequency as a final departure time.
Trains arrive at Zermatt Bahnhofplatz. The lift bases are separate: choose the actual ski sector, collect equipment and agree whether to walk, use the local e-bus or arrange a local e-taxi before heading for the mountain. The destination lists Ski-Bus and Winkelmatten e-bus routes; the operator’s ticket terms include local bus travel. The pass booking page lets guests add the appropriate Täsch/Randa daily return shuttle option, which should not be assumed included in every ski pass.
Unconfirmed: a date-specific final shuttle/e-bus journey, parking availability and an individually suitable step-free transfer through every station have not been established. Confirm the complete route, assistance, luggage and equipment arrangements with each provider before purchase. Matterhorn Alpine Crossing is a separately controlled high-mountain connection from Italy, with weather and timetable limits; it is not a road substitute or a guaranteed late way home.
The Zermatt winter pass covers the stated Swiss sectors, while International adds the specified Italian area. The product page excludes the descent from Matterhorn Glacier Paradise to Testa Grigia on Glacier Ride II from one- and two-day ski passes. Gornergrat railway inclusion is exclusively for winter sports while the pistes operate. The Peak Pass is a sightseeing/hiking product whose terms do not permit ski or snowboard descents; choose the correct activity and actual open transport scope.
Conflicting sources: the tariff page gives the winter season as 1 November 2026–3 May 2027, while the actual winter timetable and booking validity end on 2 May 2027. The tariff page lists Sunnegga/Rothorn and Gornergrat from 28 November, closing 11 and 18 April respectively, subject to individual maintenance and snow limits. Confirm the final date for the precise product and sector; none of these dates alone establishes current skiing.
Conflicting sources: the winter tariff table advertises a Zermatt adult day from CHF 89 and International from CHF 104, whereas the current winter booking page advertises from CHF 92. These are source-specific starting figures, not a quote for your selected day. The tariff’s lowest-price periods are 1–27 November and 19 April–2 May, with no Gornergrat railway inclusion during those periods. Check the actual dated quote, currency, entitlement and refund/insurance terms before paying.
The tariff lists free photo ski passes below age nine, 50% reduction for ages 9–15.99 and 15% for 16–19.99, with official age ID; the product page’s “up to 9 years” wording is less precise, so confirm eligibility at the boundary. The Zermatt pass for under-16s is listed free on Saturdays. The terms distinguish half-day purchase from 12:10 and validity from 12:15, excluding the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ascent; the booking copy compresses this distinction. A companion-card discount requires the operator’s stated supporting document. Unconfirmed: your final day-specific price, exact discount combination, border entitlement and refund outcome are not established by these examples.
Follow signed open pistes, barriers, operating hours and the instructions of lift, piste and rescue staff. The operator terms close pistes outside lift operation and after the final inspection. Its touring rules warn of lethal out-of-hours hazards and require explicit opening for any exception. This managed-alpine guide supplies no touring, off-piste, glacier-crossing or night-access permission. Community geometry, a year-round marketing claim and a ski pass do not override a closure.
The terms distinguish yellow-marked ski routes, which are not groomed and have no end-of-day patrol sweep, from managed pistes. Known community features tagged backcountry/freeride are omitted; other mapped community lines do not verify grooming or a current official route classification. Check actual weather, visibility, local warnings and snow information before starting. The operator’s avalanche page contains the general danger scale; a row describing a level is not necessarily the current bulletin for your route. High-altitude travel and changing glacier conditions require suitable preparation and advice from the responsible professionals.
The operator publishes mountain rescue +41 27 966 01 44 and the emergency number 144. Give your exact location and signed piste/lift reference and follow instructions. Its transport terms advise against taking children under three on the Trockener Steg–Matterhorn Glacier Paradise route for health reasons; this is an operator restriction/advice, not an individual medical assessment. Unconfirmed: patrol staffing, a particular rescue response, individual altitude suitability and an assisted evacuation or complete return have not been verified. Ask before setting out.
The operator’s International-area terms separately state helmet and third-party liability-insurance requirements for Italy and direct travellers to the Italian operator’s applicable conditions. Confirm those current requirements before any border trip. The Swiss and Italian transport companies remain responsible for their own facilities; buying a combined pass does not merge jurisdictions or guarantee a crossing.
The destination rental directory lists village ski/snowboard providers including Matterhorn Sport and Julen Sport, with equipment reserved separately from a pass or lesson. Agree the exact branch, fitting time, discipline, helmet/boots, collection and return deadline. A shop’s displayed opening hours do not establish a lift opening, equipment availability or suitability of a particular binding setup.
ZERMATTERS offers private lessons for adults and children and identifies meeting options at Riffelberg railway station or Sunnegga in front of the restaurant, with pick-up for specified lesson products. Its checked page labels the offer December–April. Unconfirmed: a November lesson, the precise current terrain/meeting point, language and instructor capacity are not established; arrange these before booking rather than assuming the wider winter programme is operating now. The school publishes +41 27 966 24 66 and info@zermatters.ch.
The lift operator lists winter lockers at the Sunnegga lower/upper stations, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lower station, Furi and Trockener Steg. Its published example is CHF 12 per 24 hours for two pairs of skis, boots and helmets; payment precedes use and storage is cleared at the season end. Confirm current availability and collection access. This is storage, not included equipment rental or insurance.
Zermatt Bergbahnen AG publishes +41 27 966 01 01 and info@matterhornparadise.ch for operator enquiries; Zermatt Tourism is +41 27 966 81 00 and info@zermatt.swiss at Bahnhofplatz 5. Keep these information contacts separate from rescue. The transport terms allow specified adaptive seated equipment with appropriate accompanying training. Unconfirmed: current adaptive equipment/instructor capacity, step-free access, accessible toilets and an individually suitable complete mountain return are not verified; agree the whole journey with the school and each transport provider.
Selected source-checked references only. Use the complete official plan for the network; this list is not the resort’s total piste count or live opening report.
