Lifts

Independent ODbL community geometry covers the managed southern Ylläsjärvi and northern/western Äkäslompolo downhill network and passenger alignments around Yllästunturi. The disused Rillumarei lift, uncertain Taikamatto alignment, tagged off-piste/backcountry lines and areas, Nordic tracks, ski touring, national-park trails and bike routes are excluded. Generic difficulty remains grey because no literal operator-verified local colour is established for these ways. Community names and segmented ways are not an official piste or commissioned-lift inventory. Snapshot dates come from the four original canonical OSM API tile HTTP responses, not Overpass replication timestamps. Unconfirmed: the permitted official winter-map landing page is accessible, but its artwork edition, exact geometry comparison and remote-preview or reproduction rights are not established; operator artwork is omitted. This map does not establish current skiing, grooming, patrol, access permission, safe navigation or a guaranteed return.

HOW THE AREA CONNECTS

Understand the sectors.

01

Ylläsjärvi — southern base

Access: Iso-Ylläksentie 44 is the southern resort contact and Ski School South address. The Ylläs 1 gondola serves the summit; match your hire, lesson and final journey to this base.

The operator describes long summit descents, lower learner slopes, surface lifts and park areas. The independent map does not certify the current installation, park layout or open terrain.

02

Äkäslompolo — northern and western slopes

Access: Y1 Service Centre at Tunturintie 56 groups the northern ticket office, rental, workshop and ski-school services. Kuru reaches the summit, while other lifts serve lower fell terrain.

The operator describes slopes towards Varkaankuru and the western Lännenleveä area served by Aurinko Express. Unmanaged terrain and the national park are separate from this managed alpine guide.

03

Cross-fell connections

Access: The operator describes crossing between the two sides on skis or taking the Ski Bus around the fell. Neither option is a guaranteed return on a particular day.

The villages are about 15 km apart by road. Wind can affect each side differently; check the actual open connection and the dated bus service before crossing.

01

Start: choose Y1 or Ylläsjärvi

Northern Y1 is at Tunturintie 56; the southern resort and school use Iso-Ylläksentie 44. Match your hire, lesson and transport to one base. The approximate map pin follows the southern gondola alignment.

02

Connect: summit crossing or road transfer

The operator describes crossing the fell on skis or taking the Ski Bus between sides. Kuru and the southern gondola reach summit terrain, while lower lifts serve other areas. Confirm the actual open connection and ability before crossing.

03

Return: establish the full journey to your own base

Unconfirmed: final lift boarding, download entitlement, a usable cross-fell descent and the dated last bus are not established. Wind and earlier closures can interrupt the connection; arrange a confirmed return before changing sides.

Two alpine bases with distinct services and return journeys

Published 2026/27 hours separated from the conditional opening target

Independent ODbL map excludes disused and backcountry features

Choose a side and follow the actual signed piste

This guide covers the managed alpine area on Yllästunturi, with Äkäslompolo to the north and Ylläsjärvi to the south. The operator advertises 62 slopes, 53 km and up to 464 m vertical difference, with a 719 m summit. These are attributed area summaries, not counts or measurements derived from our community geometry.

The south has summit descents and lower learner terrain; the north spreads from the Y1 base towards Varkaankuru and the western slopes. Terrain parks, learner facilities and connecting descents need their own daily open-status and skill check. No universal grade conversion is made from generic community difficulty.

Unconfirmed: current public skiing, snow, grooming, open learner areas, patrol deployment and a complete suitable descent are not established. National-park touring, Nordic tracks, lake crossings and unmanaged freeriding are outside this alpine guide and map.

Separate the published timetable from actual operation

Ylläsjärvi has the summit gondola, lower surface lifts and learner facilities. Äkäslompolo has Kuru towards the summit, Aurinko Express and other surface lifts. The operator safety page advertises 28 lifts but describes only one chair, while its southern page names Ylläs Express and community data maps it as a chair. Conflicting sources: the published lift summary does not consistently describe the southern chair; no complete current installation count, capacity or seat inventory is asserted.

The 2026/27 hours page gives 10:00–17:00 through 11 December; 10:00–19:00 from 12 December–6 January; 10:00–17:00 from 7 January–12 February, extended to 19:00 Fridays; 10:00–19:00 from 13 February–4 April; and 09:00–17:00 from 5 April–2 May. Exceptions are 10:00–15:00 on 24 December and 10:00–24:00 on 31 December.

Unconfirmed: the homepage’s 21 November target, exact first/final ski day, individual last boarding, download entitlement and complete return are not guaranteed. The operator explicitly makes boundaries and operation dependent on conditions. Summit wind may differ sharply from the base and interrupt a cross-fell journey.

Book transport to the base where your day ends

The two villages lie on opposite sides of the fell, about 15 km apart by road. Ylläsjärvi uses Iso-Ylläksentie 44; northern Y1 uses Tunturintie 56. The map pin follows the southern community gondola base, not every ticket desk, lesson meeting point, parking entrance or accommodation.

Kittilä Airport and Kolari railway station are the operator’s regional arrival gateways. The destination describes a winter Ski Bus between the villages, resort and local services; the resort sells a separate bus supplement or combined area pass. A lift pass alone must not be assumed to include ordinary day-ticket bus travel. Historical: the currently linked bus PDF is labelled 2025–2026. The destination’s undated overview gives an 08:57 Helukka departure and 17:45 or 19:35 terminal returns depending on the season; some departures serve only part of the route. These do not establish your 2026/27 last bus.

Unconfirmed: your dated 2026/27 airport/train transfer, exact bus stop and last departure, parking availability and charge, winter walking conditions and continuous accessible assistance are not established. Check a current dated timetable and arrange a return contingency before crossing the fell.

Match the date, age band and bus entitlement

The published 2026/27 tariff lists a standard one-day pass at EUR 60 and EUR 38 for the 6–11/pensioner/65+ column from 12 December. The low-season band through 11 December lists EUR 55.50/35. A reusable compatible SkiData 01 or 30 Keycard costs EUR 8.50 extra. Prices can change; confirm your actual product before payment.

The tariff says ordinary lift passes cover both sides, while Kids South/North tickets and single rides are restricted to the side of purchase. Multi-day passes are consecutive except the five-days-in-seven product. Children under six ski free with an accompanying adult and must wear a helmet; proof of age and concession eligibility may be required.

The area-pass page lists a bus supplement of EUR 5.50 per day for one to five days, or EUR 33 for six to fourteen days; season and company passes include the bus. Unconfirmed: live availability, final checkout total, individual concessions, current bus service and any special purchase conditions are not established. An available pass is not proof that lifts or a return route are open.

Respect closures and keep backcountry decisions separate

Follow the signed open managed pistes, staff directions and the actual grade. Control speed and visibility, give those ahead space, stop where visible and help after an accident. The operator prohibits carrying a child in a baby carrier on lifts or while downhill skiing. Ask staff about surface-lift technique and suitable learner terrain.

The operator warns that newly fallen snow can hide blockfield and that grooming begins after lifts close. Its separate skinning guidance and off-piste permissions are conditional; they do not authorize every mapped slope, after-hours travel or national-park route. Natural fell terrain requires current avalanche information, training and appropriate rescue equipment; the managed map is not an avalanche-safety guarantee.

Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi have separate first-aid arrangements. The operator directs emergencies to 112 and reporting to staff. Unconfirmed: current patrol/clinic staffing, individual rescue response, assisted boarding/evacuation and a safe complete return are not established. Agree personal needs and the final journey before entering another sector.

Arrange hire, lessons and assistance at the right side

Y1 rental, ticket office, shop and workshop share the northern service building at Tunturintie 56; the public contact is +358 40 509 3082 and north@yllasskiresort.fi. Its rental page says it opens thirty minutes before lifts and closes fifteen minutes after, with a fifteen-minute early opening in the spring 09:00 period. Confirm actual collection and return directly.

The southern resort and Ski School South use Iso-Ylläksentie 44, +358 16 510 3500, with south@yllasskiresort.fi for the resort and skischoolsouth@yllasskiresort.fi for lessons. Hire choices include Hill Ski Rent and Saaga Ski Rental; Saaga lists an approximate early-December 2026 opening. Northern Ski School uses Tunturintie 56, +358 40 509 3117 and skischoolnorth@yllasskiresort.fi.

The schools describe private adaptive instruction and a Bi-Ski seat subject to learning its use; the gondola page describes assisted wheelchair access. Unconfirmed: individual equipment fit, booking availability, current hire stock, restaurant/toilet opening and a continuous accessible transfer or evacuation are not established. Arrange the exact base, lesson, pass, equipment and assistance together.

04 / AT THE BASE

Facilities that change the day.

Separate northern Y1 and southern rental and ski-school services; book the correct base and confirm stock, fit and return time. Y1 ticket office, shop and workshop share a building; southern hire options include Hill Ski Rent and Saaga Ski Rental. The operator describes assisted gondola access and adaptive private lessons; individual equipment, boarding and evacuation arrangements require advance agreement.
