Colours show the published skiing status or confirmed operating calendar, not whether every lift is running. Check the operator before travel.
Confirmed dates change colours automatically in the place’s local time. Tentative dates, conflicting reports and expired checks remain black.
Independent ODbL geometry covers the managed Whakapapa downhill corridors on the northern side of Mt Ruapehu, from the base and Happy Valley through the eastern and western lift areas. Tūroa, Tukino, summit touring and backcountry terrain are outside this scope. Unidentified passenger alignments, ambiguous names and the recent mapping cluster containing explicit rough operator-map tracing notes are omitted; this leaves incomplete community coverage. Generic OSM difficulty remains grey. Community segments are not an official piste or lift inventory. The snapshot uses the canonical OSM API HTTP response Date, not an Overpass replication timestamp. Unconfirmed: the operator winter page links a PDF with a 2026 filename, but the artwork edition, current geometry comparison and preview or reproduction rights are not established. No operator artwork is copied or embedded. Geometry does not establish skiing, grooming, legal access, avalanche safety, navigation or a complete return.
Access: Beginner facilities lie below the main plaza, with operator-described elevator access and separate rental facilities.
Choose a beginner-area product and the actual lesson meeting point. Current terrain availability and individual access assistance require confirmation.
02
Eastern upper mountain
Access: The named Sky Waka, Delta, Valley and Knoll Ridge facilities serve different upper-mountain corridors.
Local slopes and volcanic gullies require the relevant open connections. A facility list and community geometry do not confirm ski operation.
03
Western terrain
Access: West Ridge and Far West are distinct from the beginner base and eastern lift hub.
Unconfirmed: the complete presently usable connection and safe return to your starting base are not established. Ask staff before crossing sectors.
01
Start: choose the plaza or Happy Valley
Bruce Road reaches the main base. The operator describes Happy Valley below the plaza with elevator access and separate rentals. Confirm your lesson and equipment meeting point before setting out.
02
Connect: distinguish the upper eastern and western areas
The named upper facilities include Sky Waka, Delta, Valley, Knoll Ridge, West Ridge and Far West. Community lines are incomplete; confirm every required open connection and suitable local grade with staff.
03
Return: agree the entire journey before crossing sectors
Unconfirmed: final skier boarding, downloading rights and the complete return to the starting base are not established. Confirm required lifts or descents, last shuttle and rental return; summer gondola times are separate.
Plan around the precise base, open terrain and a complete return. Bruce Road restrictions, volcanic hazards and staff closures matter throughout the year; summer gondola rides and future pass sales do not establish skiing.
Dedicated Happy Valley beginner area and an upper volcanic mountain
Separate sightseeing, beginner and all-mountain pass scope
Independent map with explicit missing geometry and return limits
Managed volcanic slopes and a separate beginner base
Whakapapa is a managed alpine ski area on the northern side of Mt Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park. Happy Valley is the dedicated beginner area below the main plaza; the upper mountain has steeper volcanic gullies, ridges and open terrain. This guide excludes neighbouring Tūroa and Tukino, summit routes and backcountry itineraries.
The operator advertises 550 hectares and 690 metres of vertical descent, with a highest lifted point of 2,320 metres. These advertised dimensions are separate from the independently mapped community segments. Follow local signs: green denotes beginner terrain, blue intermediate terrain, and black or double black expert terrain; those local categories are not a universal conversion of community difficulty.
Unconfirmed: current public skiing, individual winter lift schedules, final boarding, downloading entitlement and a complete return to the starting base are not established. Summer Sky Waka operation and future pass sales do not confirm ski access.
Historical: P. Doyle’s 25 August 2012 photograph looks uphill from the Whakapapa car park. It predates the present lift layout and does not establish current snow, access or operation.
Access the main Whakapapa base at the top of Bruce Road. The operator directs beginners to Happy Valley and describes elevator access from the plaza. Its named facility list includes Rangatira, Sky Waka, Delta, Valley, Knoll Ridge, West Ridge and Far West; a listed name does not establish that the lift is operating.
The 2027 pass terms give general ski hours of 09:00–16:00 only when relevant lifts and terrain are operating. The 5 November report instead describes summer Sky Waka sightseeing from 10:00–16:00, with the last upward ride at 15:30. Those sightseeing times are not winter skier boarding or a complete return plan.
Conflicting sources: the winter landing page is headed May–October 2027 but retains a 30 May–25 October 2026 paragraph; the expanded 2027 pass terms instead describe a general June–October 2027 season. Exact 2027 first and final skiing days are not established.
Unconfirmed: a continuous ski return from every western or upper sector, the last usable connection and permission to download with ski equipment are not established. Ask staff to identify every required open descent or lift before leaving your base, and allow time for equipment return and onward transport.
The operator describes a sealed six-kilometre climb from Whakapapa Village to the ski area. Bruce Road can become snowy or icy in any season; check the daily road report for closure, four-wheel-drive and chain requirements before starting uphill. Follow current staff instructions and drive to the conditions.
The arrival page lists about 1,800 free base parking spaces, allocated in arrival order, with an optional paid Platinum Parking product. Capacity is not a reservation or a guarantee that a particular space is accessible. It describes an all-day park-and-ride in Waimarino, formerly National Park Village; parking near the Chateau in Whakapapa Village has a three-hour free limit.
Local shuttles are separate operators and advance booking is recommended. Unconfirmed: a dated winter shuttle timetable, the final departure and a complete step-free route from your chosen arrival point are not established. Confirm the outward and return booking, pickup point and equipment carriage before travelling.
The accessibility page lists elevators, wheelchair-compatible Sky Waka cabins, accessible toilets, dining and priority parking, and says staff can slow or stop the gondola for boarding. Snow, ice and uneven surfaces can change access. Contact the Adaptive Team about the actual route and assistance needed.
Keep season, all-mountain and beginner products distinct
The inspected early-bird shop lists a 2027 adult season pass at NZD 499. Its scope is named-holder skiing and snowboarding on the relevant operating Whakapapa lifts and terrain; no Tūroa or Tukino entitlement is established. Passes are personal, and the terms generally exclude transfer or refund except for the separately purchased warranty and its stated conditions.
Historical: the retained winter 2026 shop pages list an adult all-mountain day pass at NZD 119 and a Happy Valley beginner pass at NZD 79, with 09:00–16:00 validity and an additional NZD 10 for purchase on arrival. They are not confirmed 2027 day prices or an operating calendar. The passes page distinguishes beginner-only, all-mountain, sightseeing and snowplay products.
Conflicting sources: the expanded 2027 terms define adults as 18–64 and seniors as 64–74, overlapping at age 64. Confirm the correct product and evidence of age before paying. The terms describe other child, youth and infant categories separately.
Unconfirmed: complete 2027 day tariffs, final boarding and ski-equipment downloading conditions are not established. Check the exact product, booking date, cancellation and warranty terms, card charges and any lesson or rental inclusions at purchase; do not infer access from a pass being on sale.
Follow ropes, local grades, closed-area signs and patrol instructions. The operator’s general terms require skis or a snowboard attached when using chairlifts or T-bars and prohibit pedestrian boarding on those facilities. Do not treat the sightseeing gondola, an OSM line or an open road as permission to ski.
Ruapehu is an active volcano. DOC advises checking current volcanic risk and closures before travel; monitoring and warning systems cannot guarantee safety. The operator instructs visitors hearing a lahar alarm to leave valleys for high ground. DOC says to move sideways from a valley to a ridge; if already in a building, car park or high ground, stay there and follow instructions. This map is not a lahar escape plan or permission to approach the crater.
Historical: the uphill and after-hours guidelines are revision 17 April 2025. They describe a working ski area with grooming machines, winch cables, snowmaking, de-icing and avalanche-control hazards at all hours. Follow signs and staff directions, keep clear of machinery and cables, check weather and avalanche conditions, leave your intentions with someone and use approved parking. Their 08:00–17:00 June–November definition does not grant unrestricted access or establish current ski hours.
For an on-slope incident, keep yourself safe, mark the site if safe and alert patrol through the nearest staffed lift. If lost, the operator says to stop, note landmarks and call 111 asking for Police. Its winter medical centre is in the Iwikau building at the base, beside the Platinum Parking barrier; the listed 08:30–16:30 June–October schedule applies only when the ski area is open. Unconfirmed: present staffing and an individual rescue or accessible evacuation arrangement are not established.
For Saturday 7 November 2026, the operator’s 07:05 local report announces that all facilities are closed because of a severe thunderstorm watch and heavy rain. Bruce Road is listed open in that same report; an open road does not override the facility closure or permit skiing. Check the latest mountain report before travelling; this notice does not establish reopening on a later day.
The operator lists rental shops above Lorenz’s Bar & Café in the base plaza and down in Happy Valley, reached by elevator. Rental equipment, lessons and lift access can be sold separately or in a package; choose the actual base and confirm fitting, collection and return arrangements. The inspected rental and workshop pages are labelled winter 2026 and show inactive outlets, so they are not a current service promise.
The lessons page describes group and private ski or snowboard instruction, while the accessibility page describes adaptive instruction and specialist rental equipment. Contact adaptive@whakapapa.com for individual adaptive arrangements and info@whakapapa.com for general planning. A generic accessible-facilities statement is not confirmation that your full itinerary is suitable.
Unconfirmed: the final winter lesson meeting point, dated rental or workshop opening, last equipment return and complete individual access assistance are not established. Confirm these with the relevant team before booking transport; check the live report again before leaving.
Selected source-checked references only. Use the complete official plan for the network; this list is not the resort’s total piste count or live opening report.
04 / AT THE BASE
Facilities that change the day.
Operator-listed base and Happy Valley rentals, lessons and workshop services have separate seasonal opening. A winter medical centre is listed in the Iwikau base building, subject to actual ski-area operation. Sky Waka sightseeing and Knoll Ridge dining are separate from permission to ski.
