Plan SkiStar’s four Sälen alpine areas with an independent map, the two lift-connected pairs, practical base and ticket advice, and clear limits on conditional winter dates and unpublished ski-bus times.
072MAPS / UNDERSTAND THE AREA
Explore the independent community map and practical starting bases. Read the coverage limits and check current opening and access with the operator.
Colours show the published skiing status or confirmed operating calendar, not whether every lift is running. Check the operator before travel.
Confirmed dates change colours automatically in the place’s local time. Tentative dates, conflicting reports and expired checks remain black.
Unconfirmed: the operator map page is linked separately, but a current artwork edition and lawful inline preview have not been verified; no operator artwork is reproduced in this guide. The independent community map covers the four managed alpine clusters and their paired transport corridors. It omits summer artificial surfaces, piste polygons, ziplines, backcountry lines, unresolved learning conveyors and doubtful duplicate or unidentified alignments. Names and references may be old or conflict with operator text; generic difficulty remains grey. It is not the resort inventory, a live opening report, access permission, proof of a suitable connection or navigation.
HOW THE AREA CONNECTS
Access: Gustavtorget, Experium/Valleberget, Sälfjällstorget or Söderåsen learning base
Learning terrain and mixed local grades; lift connection towards Högfjället.
Access: Högfjällshotellet and the chosen signed lift base
Open terrain, mainly green/blue slopes; Högfjället-only pass differs from full destination access.
Access: Tandådalstorget or Eastern Tandådalen
Different learning/park/challenging sectors and paired lifts towards Hundfjället.
Access: Hundfjället base or Trollbäckstorget learning area
Trollskogen and varied slopes, including steep terrain; paired connection to Tandådalen.
The pin is near Gustav Express in Lindvallen. Experium/Valleberget, Sälfjällstorget, Högfjällshotellet, Tandådalstorget and Hundfjället/Trollbäckstorget are distinct approaches; match the parking or transfer to the actual rental and lesson meeting point.
Source-listed transport lifts link Lindvallen with Högfjället, and Tandådalen with Hundfjället. Check signed open links and ticket scope; use separately checked ground transport between the pairs. A four-area pass does not create an all-area ski connection.
Ask local staff for the final suitable open descent and transport lift to your chosen base before leaving it. Confirm the separate last bus or Mora/airport transfer; unpublished ski-bus times and conditional season hours do not establish the full return.
01 / FIELD OVERVIEW
Sälen SkiStar guide to Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället, with an independent map, practical bases, tickets, safety and return planning.
Four distinct managed alpine areas
Two paired lift connections and separate bus planning
Visible winter, ticket and current-operation limits
This guide covers SkiStar’s four managed alpine areas in Sälen: Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället. Other Sälen operators, Nordic tracks and touring terrain have separate identities, tickets and rules. A standard SkiStar destination pass covers these four areas; it does not make every mountain in the Sälen district part of this resort.
Lindvallen has several learning bases and mostly green, blue and red terrain, with steeper black runs near Söderåsen. Högfjället has open mountain terrain and mainly green/blue slopes. Eastern Tandådalen has wider blue/red runs and a snowpark, while the main square has more demanding descents. Hundfjället combines Trollbäckstorget’s learning area and Trollskogen with varied slopes, including the very steep Väggen. These are local source descriptions, not universal equivalents of grades elsewhere.
Conflicting sources: the checked map directory advertises 101 pistes, while retained promotional cards on the area-pass and rental pages say 100. The winter-hours page identifies Lisa as 21 and Nisse as 22, but community geometry has Lisa 22 and Nisse 21. These source inventories and labels are not silently reconciled; follow current local signs and leave unverified map grades grey.
Unconfirmed: the operator advertises new Lindvallen experience terrain and a returning Snowman landmark for the coming winter; their completion and opening have not been independently established.
Historical: David Castor photographed snow-covered trees on Hundfjället on 27 January 2015. This genuine CC0 archive landscape represents one of the four areas, without establishing current snow, installations, access or operating conditions.
Choose a base that matches the intended slopes and lesson meeting point. Lindvallen’s source describes three chairlift approaches alongside surface lifts and conveyors. Högfjället and Lindvallen form one transport-lift pair; Tandådalen and Hundfjället form another. The four-area ticket is broader than either linked pair. Check the actual surface-lift connections and use separate ground transport when changing between the two pairs.
The published 2026/27 plan lists Lindvallen from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, with the start dependent on snow; Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället are listed for 11 December 2026–11 April 2027. The page reserves changes. Unconfirmed: the advertised 2026/27 dates are conditional plans, and current skiing or an assured opening date has not been established.
The general plan starts at 09:00, with ordinary lifts listed to 15:30 through 5 February and to 16:30 from 6 February. Selected lifts run to 18:00 on different days in each area, and 24 December has a 14:00 exception. Morning skiing has named lifts, selected runs and separate dates. These windows do not mean every lift, connection or beginner return remains available until the latest advertised time.
Unconfirmed: individual live lift and piste states, the final usable transport lift and a suitable complete return have not been verified. The public report did not provide a usable dated result; confirm these with local staff before setting out.
Plan arrival for Lindvallen/Experium or Sälfjällstorget, Högfjällshotellet, Tandådalstorget or Hundfjället, rather than just the town name Sälen. The guide pin is a community-mapped reference near Gustav Express in Lindvallen, not a surveyed entrance, parking allocation or accessible transfer. Allow for winter roads, equipment and a separate walk to the actual meeting point.
The operator describes rail travel via Mora, with planned Saturday Snälltåget connections from 19 December 2026 to 10 April 2027 and Sunday SJ travel from 17 January to 4 April. Connecting buses serve the four ski areas with carrier-specific stops. Book and check the actual outward and return chain, ski luggage and connection allowance; these seasonal descriptions are not a checked individual itinerary. The airport separately says transfers or cars must be prebooked, taxis are limited and no public transport serves the airport.
The ski bus accepts a valid SkiPass according to SkiStar. Unconfirmed: the 2026/27 ski-bus timetable has not been published on the checked operator page. Exact departures, last return, stop access and suitable vehicles remain to be confirmed; paired transport lifts do not connect all four areas on skis.
Parking includes paid and free zones managed with Aimo. The checked page lists SEK 25 per hour during 09:00–16:00, with a season-dependent daily maximum shown locally; some free or short stays still require registration. Read the exact zone signs and payment instructions. Do not assume a ski ticket provides free parking, a reserved space or permission to park a camper outside designated areas.
Choose the precise product, date, duration and guest category in the operator shop. The standard Sälen alpine pass includes the four SkiStar areas. Högfjället’s separate area pass is limited to that area, advertised for 1–8 days and six lifts/nine slopes. Nordic-only and combined Ski- & Cross-CountryPass products have different scopes; a Nordic ticket is not an alpine lift ticket.
The Högfjället page advertises a starting EUR 27/day, while the area overview uses a starting SEK 295/day. They are separate displayed starting offers, not a verified conversion or a quote for the same date and skier. Unconfirmed: no date-specific four-area day-pass quote, complete card charge or final concession entitlement has been verified. Displayed starting prices for Högfjället alone are separate products and must not be treated as the destination price.
The general SkiPass page says children through age six ski free; the current Swedish contract makes this conditional on an approved helmet. Add any required entitlement/card in the actual booking. A qualifying family pass allows two adults to alternate using one pass under its specific terms, with children’s passes separate. Do not infer permission to share an ordinary personal pass or automatic access to another operator.
The Swedish booking conditions applicable from 1 July 2026 allow SkiPass, activity and equipment-rental cancellation or rebooking up to the day before first validity, subject to a SEK 95 administration fee. Later cancellation, insurance and reduced-operation claims have separate conditions. Read the selected product contract and snow-guarantee rules; neither bad weather nor a closed individual lift establishes an automatic full refund.
Follow local signs, closures and staff directions, control speed for weather, visibility and ability, and give way to skiers below. Look uphill before starting, avoid stopping where hidden, leave space when passing and assist/report accidents. SkiStar applies the Swedish SLAO rules. Sledging on ski slopes and skiing with children in carriers or harnesses are prohibited.
After closing, the ski area is a workplace and must not be used. Grooming, cables and control work can create serious hazards. Generic advice to walk at the side of a piste does not authorize recreational uphill skiing; ask for the actual local touring rules and permitted times. This guide and its map provide no touring or off-piste access permission.
The operator’s avalanche page distinguishes its open-lift/slope surroundings from uncontrolled terrain and does not guarantee off-piste safety. Stay on suitable marked open pistes unless independently prepared and permitted for terrain outside this guide. A previous track, a mapped line or the presence of a lift is not evidence that a route is open or safe. Seek the day’s information from patrol; the published Sälen avalanche-information number is +46 280 85599. Use the locally indicated emergency procedure for an accident.
Historical: The retained Swedish avalanche notice ends reporting on 20 April 2026. It is historical seasonal information, not a current avalanche bulletin or a confirmed opening date for the coming winter. Check actual visibility, wind, weather, closures and the entire return locally before leaving a base.
Book rental and lessons for the actual area and meeting point. Lindvallen has learning bases around Sydpolen/Söderåsen, Valleberget/Experium and Sälfjällstorget; Tandådalen has separate main-square and eastern children’s areas; Hundfjället identifies Trollbäckstorget. A destination-wide booking does not remove the need to identify the correct shop, instructor and return location.
The rental service offers full sets or separate skis, boots and poles; provide accurate height, weight and footwear information and have fit and adjustments checked by staff. A loan helmet must be added to the rental booking. The operator describes return to a Sälen SkiStarshop offering rental and advance ordering for delivery; verify the selected shop’s winter hours and actual delivery arrangements.
SkiStar lists adaptive lessons and equipment in Sälen, companion-pass collection with the required certificate or medical documentation, and a documented priority-boarding scheme. These offers require a practical assessment of the guest’s equipment and support needs. Unconfirmed: step-free travel from the selected parking or bus stop through equipment collection, boarding and the complete return has not been established for an individual guest. Arrange the actual base, compatible equipment, assistance and vehicle in advance.
Use SkiStar’s official customer-support entry point or the actual destination shop/reception for booking, assistance and local return questions. The avalanche-information patrol contact is separate from commercial support. Restaurant, accommodation, childcare and Experium products have their own bookings and opening arrangements; a ski pass does not establish their availability.
Selected historical name and local-grade references only. The coverage note explains the unavailable current official plan. This list establishes neither the full inventory nor current opening or access.
