Managed alpine skiing around Ruka village, Saarua, Vuosseli and Masto, with an independent ski map and practical base-to-return planning. Read individual lift status and dated transport details before crossing the fell.
042MAPS / UNDERSTAND THE AREA
Explore the independent community map and practical starting bases. Read the coverage limits and check current opening and access with the operator.
Colours show the published skiing status or confirmed operating calendar, not whether every lift is running. Check the operator before travel.
Confirmed dates change colours automatically in the place’s local time. Tentative dates, conflicting reports and expired checks remain black.
Unconfirmed: the operator map page is linked separately, but a current artwork edition and lawful inline preview have not been verified; no operator artwork is reproduced in this guide. Independent OSM geometry spans the village/front, Talvijärvi, Kelo, Pessari, Saarua, Valley, Vuosseli and Masto corridors. Unresolved anonymous lifts, unnamed piste connectors, an unmatched family-slope identity, zip line and backcountry/freeride/treeride features are omitted. Community labels and gaps do not establish present operator aliases, open sector connections, grooming or permitted access. Map objects are not the operator’s piste/lift inventory. Generic difficulty stays grey; use local signs, not this map, for navigation or a safe return.
HOW THE AREA CONNECTS
Access: Piste and village gondola/Village Express approaches; confirm open marked return.
Front slopes, Kuru, Talvijärvi and Kelo are distinct source-named areas.
Access: Saarua parking and Valley rental/learning-area approaches; check actual gondola and chair status.
Saarua chairs and eastern family facilities; a scenic link is separate from a ski descent.
Access: Vuosselinportti and Masto parking approaches; agree the return before leaving your starting sector.
Eastern and south-eastern named corridors, with separate chairs and surface lifts.
Choose Piste in Ruka village, Valley at Bistrotie 2, or Vuosselinportti at Jussinkuja 6 to match rental and lessons. The pin is a community gondola-station reference, not a parking or accessible entrance. Saarua and Masto have separate listed approaches.
The operator describes the Village-2-Valley gondola through Saarua to the eastern Valley. It does not reach the main Ruka summit. Check individual lift status, your ticket and the open marked onward route before crossing; the independent linework cannot establish continuous ski access.
Confirm the final open marked descent and last boarding to your own base before leaving it. Closed slopes and after-hours slope travel are prohibited. Unconfirmed: the 2026/27 SkiBus timetable and a guaranteed fallback transfer are not established; arrange a road return if a link closes.
01 / FIELD OVERVIEW
A sourced Ruka alpine planning guide with a licensed independent map, six practical sections, base and return orientation, dated ticket information and explicit operating limits.

Explicit closure and return restrictions
Ruka is a managed alpine ski area in Kuusamo, Northern Ostrobothnia. The operator advertises 41 slopes and 22 lifts; these are its network totals, not a count of the community-map objects displayed here. Ruka village gives access to the western front slopes, while Ruka Valley sits on the eastern side near the family learning area. Saarua, Vuosseli and Masto have distinct parking and lift approaches.
The operator’s slope table uses the local descriptions very easy, easy, intermediate and challenging. Its numeric level identifiers are not a universal scale. Choose a marked run appropriate to your ability and inspect park features before use. Generic OSM difficulty remains grey here; no colour or live suitability is inferred from it.
Historical: the photograph shows snowmaking on Ruka’s illuminated slopes on 14 November 2016, by Timo Newton-Syms. It is archive resort context, not evidence of today’s snow, grooming, operating lifts or permission to enter the photographed slope.
The operator lists Village Express as a six-seat chair, the Village-2-Valley scenic gondola, Saarua III and Saarua Express, Vuosseli Express and the eight-seat Masto Express, alongside surface lifts and learning carpets. The gondola links the village, Saarua and Ruka Valley; the operator’s FAQ says it does not reach the main summit, served by Village Express. Confirm the boarding point and whether your intended downhill passenger journey is allowed.
The published season window is 2 October 2026–2 May 2027, with standard slope hours 09:30–19:00 and gondola hours 09:30–23:00, subject to exceptions. On 30 October the individual table listed Saarua III at 10:00–18:00, Saarua Express at 09:30–19:00 and the gondola at 09:30–23:00; most other lifts were marked closed. This is a dated source snapshot, not a promise that every advertised sector is open.
Conflicting sources: the exceptions heading says 3 May, but its actual final-day row says 2 May 2027, with slopes closing at 17:00 and the gondola at 18:00. Check the intended day directly. Christmas Eve has a 14:00 slope finish; Christmas Day starts at 11:30. Friday night skiing is listed for selected lifts from 4 December to 16 April, with different 21:00 or 23:00 finishes. Weather can close lifts earlier.
Use the named base that matches your lesson, rental and intended terrain. The operator lists Piste at Rukankyläntie 17 in Ruka village, Valley rental at Bistrotie 2, and Vuosselinportti at Jussinkuja 6. The approximate map pin marks the community-mapped village gondola station; it is not a surveyed car-park entrance or step-free transfer.
The official parking page lists a 320-space village garage open around the clock at EUR 1.50 per hour or EUR 15 per day. Other listed approaches include Saarua, Ruka Valley, Masto and Vuosseli. Northern village parking has a hotel-construction warning dating from July 2025, with part of the area closed and bus parking moved to the stadium. Obey current signs and park only where permitted; listed capacity is not a space reservation.
Historical: the official bus page still gives 7 November 2025–1 May 2026 for SkiBus lines 1 and 2 and December 2025–May 2026 for line 3 to Kuusamo. Unconfirmed: the 2026/27 winter SkiBus dates, departures and current free-travel eligibility are not established. The airport service requires advance booking, but the page mixes older dated departure fields; verify the actual flight, stop and return in the linked carrier booking service. Do not use the old timetable as your final connection.
Unconfirmed: a continuous accessible route from your particular drop-off through rental collection and lift boarding, suitable equipment and available personal assistance require an individual arrangement. An assistant’s ticket entitlement does not establish physical access. Agree a fallback road transfer before relying on a late gondola or cross-sector ski return.
The operator’s 2026/27 on-site tariff, stated valid 2 October 2026–2 May 2027 and subject to change, lists a one-day adult pass at EUR 58, youth aged 12–17 and qualifying students/seniors at EUR 52, and children aged 6–11 at EUR 35.50. A new KeyCard costs EUR 8 without a deposit. Check eligibility and the final checkout price; rental, lessons and attraction tickets are separate.
The current tariff offers 20% off eligible online early-season tickets used by 30 November 2026, then a 5% online reduction from 1 December, with product exclusions. Historical: the FAQ’s early-season answer still states October–November 2025; it does not define the current offer. The Family Park-only ticket and Family Park-plus-gondola ticket have different coverage. Children under six need the specified helmet, accompanying ticket-holding parent and collected free ticket; the combined learning-area product has an exception.
The tariff says day and longer Ruka passes are also valid at Pyhä; do not extend that statement to every season-pass product. Multi-day tickets normally use consecutive days, except the expressly listed 3-in-4 and 5-in-7 products. Confirm the chosen start date and any Friday night-skiing validity. Passes are personal except the corporate product.
The operator applies the Finnish Ski Area Association’s lift-and-slope terms; the linked EU text is revised 18 October 2019 and separately identifies non-EU terms. Weather closures and compensation have conditions, rather than an unconditional refund promise. Rental and ski-school arrangements have separate terms. The FAQ allows an assistant’s matching ticket at the counter with an EU Disability Card or another certificate showing the need for assistance; confirm your evidence before purchase.
Ruka’s rules prohibit ski touring within the marked slopes and ski-resort area, entering closed slopes, and moving on slopes outside opening hours. Pets and drones are prohibited in the slope area; sledging belongs only in separately designated areas. Carrying a child in a backpack on slopes or lifts is forbidden. These restrictions remain applicable even when a line is visible on the community map.
Choose terrain and speed for your ability and the day’s conditions, give downhill users room, stop where visible, and leave lift lines only at designated points. The operator recommends a helmet and correctly adjusted equipment. Keep clear of grooming machines and snowmobiles; a dated snowmaking photograph is not an invitation to approach working equipment. Parks need advance inspection of features and clear landings.
For a slope accident, notify staff at a lower lift station or call the published Ski Patrol number +358 40 481 8900. For a serious accident or an incident outside the slopes, call 112. Check the day’s reporting and return arrangements with staff before skiing. Strong wind, extreme cold and thunderstorms can interrupt lifts; the map does not establish current patrol coverage, safe off-piste access or a guaranteed evacuation route.
Piste, Valley and Vuosselinportti provide operator-listed equipment rental and ticket sales. Piste also advertises ski servicing and lockers. The 2026/27 rental table lists a standard one-day set at EUR 44.50 and a child/senior set at EUR 27; its day is 09:30–19:00. The child set includes a helmet. Check the exact set, age category and return time; the service window is not proof that your lift or shop is open.
The rental guidance recommends advance online booking with participant measurements and fitting the boots at collection. Return equipment to the same rental location under the operator’s terms. Nordic equipment is listed only at Piste and Vuosselinportti; this profile and map cover managed alpine skiing. The ski school offers alpine and snowboard lessons, children’s courses, private instruction and adaptive skiing. Book the actual discipline, level, language, date and meeting point separately.
Unconfirmed: live rental stock, each shop’s dated daily hours, lesson availability, accessible equipment and individual hands-on assistance are not guaranteed by the service lists. Contact the ski school at +358 400 101 636 or skischool@ruka.fi. The operator’s general resort number is +358 10 382 5100; RukaBooking is +358 10 382 5225 and sales@ruka.fi. Keep those booking channels separate from Ski Patrol and emergency calls.
Selected historical name and local-grade references only. The coverage note explains the unavailable current official plan. This list establishes neither the full inventory nor current opening or access.
