A roadside alpine ski area at the Cairnwell Pass, with nursery slopes beside the base and a three-valley network extending east and west of the A93. Natural snow, wind and the return connections shape the practical day.
078MAPS / UNDERSTAND THE AREA
Explore the independent community map and practical starting bases. Read the coverage limits and check current opening and access with the operator.
Colours show the published skiing status or confirmed operating calendar, not whether every lift is running. Check the operator before travel.
Confirmed dates change colours automatically in the place’s local time. Tentative dates, conflicting reports and expired checks remain black.
Unconfirmed: the operator map page is linked separately, but a current artwork edition and lawful inline preview have not been verified; no operator artwork is reproduced in this guide. Independent community centre lines cover both roadside sides and the middle/eastern managed network. Closed area outlines, separate Nordic/approach tracks and doubtful Glas Maol descent lines are omitted conservatively because the prohibited bowl cannot be distinguished safely. The named Glas Maol lift is infrastructure only. Unnamed centre lines remain unnamed and grey; generic OSM difficulty is never converted to local colours. Raw spellings are retained. This is not a complete official inventory, live opening, access permission, continuous return or navigation. The canonical API snapshot uses its actual HTTP response Date, not an Overpass replication timestamp.
HOW THE AREA CONNECTS
Access: West of the A93: roadside nursery, Baddoch and Cairnwell/Butcharts/Carn Aosda community lift geometry.
Beginner-ticket limits differ from full-area scope; choose the meeting base before collecting equipment.
Access: East of the A93: Sunnyside, Cluny and Tom Dearg community approaches towards the middle valley.
Confirm every open connection and the return before travelling farther east.
Access: The more distant eastern network depends on actual connecting lifts and pistes.
Glas Maol bowl is prohibited; doubtful descent geometry omitted and no continuous return promised.
The point marks the west-side Cairnwell chair base beside Tea@TheShee. Nursery and beginner-ticket scope differ from the east-side Sunnyside approaches; confirm the actual school meeting point and hire collection before crossing the A93.
Community geometry runs from Sunnyside through Cluny/Meall Odhar towards Coire Fionn and the named Glas Maol lift. Use only signed open managed connections; the prohibited bowl and doubtful descent geometry are omitted. No complete east–west skiing link is guaranteed.
Unconfirmed: final winter tows, the complete east-sector return and any permitted chair download have not been verified. Confirm the open route and last connections with staff before leaving the roadside base; a mapped line is not an assured return. Snow gates and ground transport are separate constraints; do not infer the last winter service from sightseeing hours.
01 / FIELD OVERVIEW
Independent Glenshee guide with a scoped community map, three orientation cards, 2026/27 ticket conflicts, A93 access and patrol restrictions.
Roadside nursery terrain and distinct east/west sectors
Independent whole-area map with conservative Glas Maol omissions
Visible winter-date, return and tariff limitations
Glenshee’s managed alpine area lies at the Cairnwell Pass in the southern Cairngorms. The operator describes three valleys and four mountains, with nursery terrain beside the main car park, roadside progression areas and more distant Coire Fionn and Glas Maol sectors. Snowboarding uses the managed network too; backcountry tours are a separate activity outside this guide.
The skiing page advertises over 40 km and 26 blue/red intermediate runs, while Mountain Info lists 22 uplifts. These are attributed operator inventory claims, not measurements or the number of OSM features. Its named Tiger reference is locally black. Local green, blue, red and black signs do not imply a universal difficulty conversion.
The independent map preserves community geometry across the west and east sectors. Unnamed downhill centre lines remain unnamed and grey. The prohibited Glas Maol bowl, doubtful Glas Maol descent geometry, closed area outlines and separate Nordic/approach tracks are omitted; the named Glas Maol passenger lift is shown only as community infrastructure, not access clearance.
The community map places Cairnwell, Baddoch, Claybokie, Dink Dink, Plastic Slope and the Butcharts/Carn Aosda installations west of the A93, with Sunnyside chairs and Pomas east of the road. Cluny, Tom Dearg, Beag, Meall Odhar and Caenlochan lead into the eastern network towards Coire Fionn and Glas Maol. Source spellings are retained; the map does not assert a current complete operator inventory.
The 2026/27 beginner ticket explicitly limits its scope to Dink Dink, Rope Tow, Claybokie and Baddoch Chairlift. A full-area pass permits available facilities subject to conditions and its own validity; it does not promise every tow or connecting slope. Decide your starting side and meeting point before collecting hire or crossing the road.
The Winter page now says the operator plans to start winter sports from 19 December 2026, with tickets on sale from 1 December. Unconfirmed: this is a planned opening, not a confirmed skiing calendar; exact 2026/27 operating days, lift-by-lift hours and last return still depend on current snow, weather and staff instructions.
Historical: the visitor page still labels its season 1 December 2024–28 April 2025 and a planned 21 December 2024 artificial-snow start. Its office, rental and shop hours are not verified 2026/27 operating times.
Historical: the daily report is labelled Friday 30 October at 15:28 and says snowsports is closed. At this 3 November source review that report is older than 24 hours; it does not establish a fresh current skiing observation. The Winter page’s 2–15 November café closure and sightseeing-chair closure have separate scope.
Unconfirmed: final winter tows, the complete east-sector return and any permitted chair download have not been verified. Confirm the open route and last connections with staff before leaving the roadside base; a mapped line is not an assured return.
Reach the Cairnwell Pass on the A93 from Braemar in the north or Blairgowrie/Perth in the south. The operator warns of winter road disruption and queues at the Braemar and Spittal of Glenshee snow gates. Check the actual road report and public traffic cameras before travel; an open road does not establish skiing availability.
The roadside base address is Cairnwell, Braemar, Aberdeenshire AB35 5XU. Parking is included with a ski lift pass; standalone parking is sold separately and the operator asks for a displayed ticket. The visitor page identifies Blue Badge spaces in front of the café. The point marks the inspected community-map Cairnwell chair base, not a reserved space, surveyed entrance or step-free boarding route.
Historical: the operator’s transport page describes Ember service as new for 2025 and names Edinburgh Travel. Unconfirmed: exact 2026/27 winter departures, the mountain stop, luggage arrangements and a usable final return have not been verified with those carriers.
Unconfirmed: current standalone and overnight parking conditions and a complete accessible route from a designated space to the selected lesson or lift have not been verified. Confirm these separately before arranging the journey.
The operator’s explicitly labelled winter 2026/27 tariff lists a full-area adult one-day pass at £40, junior under-16/senior over-65–74 at £30 and student with proof at £35, including parking. The adult beginner product is £35 with its specified four-installation scope. These are checked published quotes, not a guarantee of stock, date eligibility or open terrain.
Conflicting sources: the 2026/27 tariff introduction and ticket-office page say half-day passes are not offered, but the same tariff retains an after-12:30 office-only half-day note. Ask the ticket office before relying on any afternoon product or its quoted price.
The tariff lists the normal adult season pass from 1 November at £425; earlier discounted bands are historical at this check. Bring the booking QR code. The ticket office directs pass-only collection to its kiosk/window and combined hire collection to the rental department. Tickets are dated, non-transferable and subject to the operator’s actual closing/refund rules.
Published terms distinguish complete lift closure from choosing not to attend and partial use: they describe 50% after less than two hours, no refund after two hours and a full refund or seasonal credit for a whole-day closure. Check the contract supplied with the actual booking; road disruption, partial terrain and personal cancellation must not be assumed to receive identical treatment.
Stay within the open signed managed area and obey patrol closures. The operator expressly prohibits skiing or boarding inside Glas Maol bowl because of avalanche risk. This restriction is separate from its promotion of the named Glas Maol sector; neither a pass nor a community map authorises the bowl. Do not follow unverified freeride or off-piste alternatives.
Patrol can be reached through lift staff, café staff or the medical room at the gable end of the ticket-office building. The operator publishes 013397 41320 extension 4 when staff cannot readily be reached, and its touring page directs emergencies outside the ski-centre boundary to 999 and Mountain Rescue. Give the actual incident location; the base café address is not the casualty’s position.
Keep well clear of grooming vehicles and steel winch cables, which may operate by day or night. The operator asks walkers/tourers to follow its designated transit instructions, avoid tow uptracks and stay outside managed snow fences when ascending. This alpine profile does not grant uphill or after-hours access. Dogs are excluded from pistes during winter operation; children in backpacks/chest harnesses are prohibited on runs. Secure loose straps around tows and chairs.
Check a current dated mountain and avalanche forecast plus on-site information. Bad visibility, wind, ice and thin snow can change the usable terrain and return independently. Local colour grades and an archive photograph do not establish safety, grooming, current openings or suitability for your ability.
The base provides ticketing, rentals, a shop, toilets and Tea@TheShee. The operator lists third-party Glenshee Ski & Board School and Blair Snow Sports School for lessons rather than selling instruction itself. Arrange the lesson first and confirm the correct meeting side, equipment and lift-pass requirements.
The 2026/27 tariff quotes an adult one-day ski/board package including boots and poles at £34, with a helmet extra (£10 adult; £6 junior/child). Breakage cover excludes loss. These are published tariff examples; equipment availability and fitting are separate from a lift reservation.
Conflicting sources: the tariff requests hire booking by the previous day, then also describes booking until noon on the attendance day and walk-in service. Reserve ahead and obtain the actual collection, return and cancellation terms for your booking.
Conflicting sources: the café page advertises a Wednesday–Sunday base service, while the winter notice closes Tea@TheShee from 2–15 November, reopening 16 November, and the 30 October status also labels the base café closed. Verify actual service for your visit.
Unconfirmed: the linked disability page provides a DSUK contact and describes indoor/dry-slope sessions, but does not establish a dated Glenshee adaptive session or a complete accessible winter arrival and lift-transfer chain. Arrange individual needs directly.
For operational enquiries use the centre’s published 013397 41320; booking enquiries go to bookings@ski-glenshee.co.uk and general enquiries to info@ski-glenshee.info. The linked DSUK contact is bookings@disabilitysnowsport.org.uk / 01479 788770. Café, rental and adaptive availability remain independent of the skiing status.
Historical: Chris Morgan’s photograph shows the Tea@TheShee base and chairlift on 30 June 2022, in summer. It establishes local context, not present snow, skiing, café or lift operation.
Selected historical name and local-grade references only. The coverage note explains the unavailable current official plan. This list establishes neither the full inventory nor current opening or access.
