HOW THE AREA CONNECTS

Understand the sectors.

01

Main Basin

Access: McDougall’s Chondola and authorised learner infrastructure.

Learning area, progression terrain and parks; choose the open terrain appropriate to your ability.

02

Captain’s / Arcadia / Valley View

Access: Authorised chairlifts and marked connecting pistes.

Different grades and return connections; Valley View parking requires intermediate skiing.

03

Willows / Soho

Access: Willow’s Quad and Soho Express when authorised.

Open alpine terrain; Soho Basin is closed to ski touring parties.

01

Choose your starting base

Use the operator’s driving directions for the final approach. Valley View parking requires intermediate skiing; the general mountain-area pin is not the base entrance or an accessible route.

02

Understand the connections

Main Basin has learning terrain, progression areas and parks. Captain’s, Arcadia, Valley View, Willows and Soho have different grades and connecting pistes.

03

Plan the return

Plan the return for your parking area before the connecting lifts close. Touring ascent uses designated routes only, and Soho Basin is closed to touring parties.

A practical guide to Cardrona’s winter terrain, transport, pass scope, touring rules and adaptive facilities. Cardrona is distinct from Treble Cone and the Snow Farm Nordic network. Winter 2026 has ended; winter 2027 dates are tentative.

Basins, selected pistes and map limits

Cardrona is an alpine resort above the Cardrona Valley in Otago, separate from Treble Cone and the Snow Farm cross-country network. The operator advertises 615 hectares and 47 groomable runs. Its statistics say five basins, while the descriptive map page names Main, Soho, Arcadia, Captain’s, Valley View and Willows. These are different advertised scopes, not a surveyed inventory or a count of open pistes.

The linked W26 artwork is the actual winter map inspected here. Skyline is green, Highway 89 blue and Gin and Raspberry red; only these three named segments count in this directory. The artwork has no printed difficulty key, so the colours are retained without a universal grade conversion. The operator’s progression guide describes Skyline after the learning area; ask instructors about the next suitable open run.

Lift infrastructure and winter hours

The map names Soho Express, Willow’s Quad, McDougall’s Chondola, Whitestar Express, Captain’s Express and Valley View Quad. The operator also lists conveyors, a T-bar and a platter tow. McDougall’s combines chairs and gondola cabins; cabin availability can change with weather. The rendered report groups some learner infrastructure, so its ten lift rows are not an individual installation count.

Published winter hours are 08:30–16:00, with lift-specific variation. On 28 October the rendered report says winter 2026 has ended, the road has no public access and all ten grouped lift rows are closed. The proposed 12 June–10 October 2027 season remains tentative. The 12 December reopening is for summer operations. Check the daily report and return connections before travel.

Scoped 3 November 2026 source check: the operator says its 2026 winter season is closed; the stated 12 December reopening concerns summer operations. Unconfirmed: exact 2027 skiing dates, daily lift hours and the complete winter return remain unestablished. The independent current observation expires automatically; check actual road and mountain instructions before travel.

Mountain road, buses and accessible arrival

The final access road is 14 kilometres and unsealed. Carry suitable chains, fit them when directed and obey staff, road closures and no-stopping zones. Snow, ice, rockfall and landslides can affect access. Follow parking staff; Valley View parking requires an intermediate chairlift-and-ski connection and is unsuitable when you need the main-base rentals first.

The retained bus table gives Cardrona departures back to Queenstown at 16:15 and Wānaka at 16:30; the general transport terms say 16:15. Product cards still cover September to season end, so these are not confirmed 2027 services. Confirm the season, pickup, fare and last return directly. The Pines shuttle is described as free and unbooked; do not assume capacity or apply its separate October timetable to 2027.

The accessibility guide states that no dedicated accessible transport is currently provided and the Pines coach has stairs. Accessible parking is in front of Noodle Bar, with sealed access toward the courtyard. The alternative route to the adaptive room passes over gravel or snow. Agree the actual vehicle, unloading and assistance arrangements with the adaptive team before booking.

Choose the season and exact pass scope

The selected Saver tab on the public 2027 season-pass page shows an adult age 18–64 Drop 1 price of NZD 1,029 when checked on 28 October 2026. It covers Cardrona only and excludes 5–16 July 2027 inclusive; a separate valid day pass is needed during the blackout. Unlimited is a different two-mountain product. Prices are in NZD and include GST.

The linked booking product could not be inspected, so this is a dated public-page offer, not a verified checkout total or reservation. Confirm the actual category, availability and current terms before payment. A general 2027 skier day fare was not established. Lessons, equipment and transport have separate scopes; do not treat a summer sightseeing or bike ticket as a winter ski pass.

Touring gate, boundaries and machinery

Cardrona touring access starts at the bottom of Carpark B and follows Thompson’s Track, then Queenstown Return, to the controlled gate beyond Soho Express. It opens only once the relevant seasonal access is authorised. Uphill travel is forbidden on other groomed pistes. Soho Basin is within the operational ski area and is closed to touring parties. Avalanche-control work closes the access route; inspect the actual OPEN/CLOSED sign and ask patrol.

During 08:30–16:00 a valid Cardrona lift pass is required to ski through the resort. Outside those hours the operator requires a high-visibility vest and headtorch on the designated route; after 16:00 return only along Thompson’s Track to Carpark B. These rules never override a closure. Groomers, winch cables and vehicles remain hazards. Backcountry travel requires appropriate avalanche knowledge, equipment and current forecasts; this guide does not establish a safe itinerary. Cardrona patrol is +64 3 443 1576.

Lessons, adaptive support and contacts

Arrange ski or snowboard lessons, rentals and workshop needs separately. General enquiries: info@cardrona-treblecone.com or +64 3 443 8880; specialist adaptive enquiries: adaptive@cardrona.com. The adaptive team offers coaching, equipment and volunteer support, with equipment requests at least a week ahead. The rental list and linked guide say NZD 25 for stand-up outriggers, while the same page’s FAQ says NZD 50. The applicable current tariff remains unresolved; request an exact quote.

The accessibility guide maps toilets and the adaptive room. It records a roughly 15 cm Lounge entrance step, a 10 cm Captain’s Café entrance step and about 50 metres of snow before McDougall’s gondola. Lift staff can assist with chair loading; a cabin does not guarantee a continuous step-free route. Confirm equipment, transfers, meeting point and assistance for your own needs. Medical facilities are advertised on the mountain, without an off-season response guarantee.
